Global Sports to start multi-team event in Cayman Islands in 2017

GEORGE TOWN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – Global Sports Management, in partnership with Caymax Sports LTD, is announcing a new eight-team college basketball multi-team event that will start in November of 2017.

“We are ecstatic about Global Sports partnering with Caymax Sports in making this one of the top preseason college basketball events annually,” said tournament director Maury Hanks, who is also chief executive officer for Global Sports.

“Playing this tournament in a venue alongside the most beautiful beaches in the world will make this an event that everyone in college basketball will be trying to get an opportunity to compete in for the future.”

“This is a historic moment for sports in the Cayman Islands,” said the Honorable Osbourne Bodden, Minister for Sports in the Cayman Islands. “The support for the Cayman Basketball Classic from our islands will be absolutely tremendous and we welcome the opportunity to showcase our beautiful country to those fans who will follow their respective college teams from the United States. The Government is proud to support this event as we know it will be a huge boost to the economy.”

The Cayman Basketball Classic is being sponsored by the Mountain West Conference.

“The Mountain West is thrilled to partner with Global Sports Management and Maury Hanks to develop a new and exciting NCAA Division I men’s basketball exempt event in the Cayman Islands starting in 2017,” said Dan Butterly, senior associate commissioner for the Mountain West Conference.

“With a new arena and the tremendous hospitality of the Cayman Islands, we are excited to have a Mountain West team guaranteed a slot in this annual event.”

Located in the western Caribbean Sea, the Cayman Islands comprises the three islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.
